Small Animals

Young students carve small animal figures from a pre-cut shape, learning to use tools to shape, sand, and polish their sculpture, with the option to engrave patterns. This project is an excellent way to explore themes such as life cycles and the importance of pollinators.

Your Choices

You can choose one shape for the whole class to focus on, or let students
pick from all available shapes. Each student will carve one sculpture during
the workshop.

Learning Outcomes

Students will learn to use tools to carve a small pre-cut soapstone piece.
They will practice hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills while learning
basic carving techniques.
Students will be introduced to the difference between 2D and 3D art while
exploring form, texture, and shape.
Through this project, students explore rocks and minerals, animal symbolism,
environmental awareness, and cultural connections.
