My 11 year old enjoyed this, though it was hard to get it as chiseled as the box makes it look.

I would highly recommend these kits over anything I have been able to find. Wood carving kits are actually priced better. The box and packaging are very nice. The diorama is a wonderful backdrop. The stone is well cut, not chipped, and makes a nice hefty size piece.
The directions are specific and attention to detail for each piece. You could easily cut new stone or wood to make another similar project using these same directions if you had the material and equipment. The cloth and sandpaper are slivers of what they should be, especially for beginners, but that is my suggestion for improvement. These are great beginner kits. And because we ordered a few, the discount paid for shipping and partial tax. A plus for lesser incomes.

Great customer service and great product! I haven’t used it yet because it’s a Christmas gift but this is the second one I’ve bought. They’re so cute. The packaging is really nice too.

The kit arrived quickly. I was very happy with it. Carving the arctic hare was fun and easy to do following the pictogram instructions. I bought this kit because I was so happy with the soapstone bear kit I'd purchased earlier.

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

Is stone carving safe?

Yes, the stone we use is certified free from harmful elements like asbestos and is primarily talk or calcite. We encourage the use of water during carving and sanding stages to avoid any airborne dust.

What types of stone are used?

We use natural occurring stone in our products. Both Soapstone and Alabaster. Soapstone is a colourful and soft mainly talc based stone that is certified safe for carving. Alabaster is a beautiful semi-translucent calcite based stone slightly harder than soapstone.

How to carve without making dust?

The more frequent you wet the stone and tools when carving, the less dry stone dust you create. We developed this carving process to use water and be done easily at home.

Do I need skills to do this?

We invented this starter stone carving projects that can be very successful without any carving experience!

How can I get better at carving stone?

My first recommendation is to join our free carving webinars. It is a great place to learn more and ask questions. You should also try more complicated projects and try different stones. I have carved many types of stone over my life as a sculptor.

What are some options for finishes?

We suggest gently heating the stone and using a paraffin wax, but you can also use mineral oil or Tung oil to enhance the colours. The oils will fade over time, whereas the wax will last. One other option for a more durable finish is to spray the finished piece with a clear lacquer.
