the story of Studiostone Creative; a company built by artists.

We are an artist driven company based in Vancouver, B.C.  Our dual track business has been promoting creativity and introducing people of all ages to the art of stone carving.  In 2014. we developed a cross promotional platform that consisted of a 90 minute education program offered to grades 3-7, that is now recognized as the School Carving Program*. What we teach is what we do and we consider ourselves very fortunate that our product line can be based upon our School Carving Program.

The classrooms have allowed us to refine the impossibilities of a timeless art form and make stone carving education accessible to everyone. It’s wonderful to witness the pride people feel when they carve their own stone carving.  Our “make your own” products focus on the art-making experience and the benefits of the creative process. Our goal is to inspire creativity and grow together by sharing our passion for education, art and nature with our products and services that are grounded in the principles of stone carving and hands-on learning.  It is important that our services are affordable and accessible to schools, community agencies, and institutions such as museums and hospitals.  It is equally important that our product lines adhere to best practices and ensure positive outcomes. We strive to consistently offer an outstanding product that provides not only a creative process, but also a treasured carving as the end product. We’ve worked diligently to streamline the School Carving Program and create the best soapstone carving kit on the market.

Our Story

Studiostone Creative grew out of Studiostone, a collaborative stone carving studio based out of East Vancouver, Canada owned and operated by Oliver Harwood. Oliver had a desire to create an artist driven company made up of a community of sculptors whose passion is the art of stone carving. He also wanted to somehow extend his own love of stone carving to others, more specifically children. Working with an inner city school teacher in Vancouver, the School Carving Program began and the seeds for Studiostone Creative were planted.

The decision to form a company were marked by humble beginnings and driven by a devotion to stone carving that was shared by fellow sculptors Jocelyne Dodier and Kent Laforme. The passion these three have for stone carving is reflected in their commitment to stone carving education and this has helped shape the values and the philosophy of Studiostone Creative.

The deeper currents of Studiostone Creative are grounded in concerns for art and nature, and exploring the connection between creative sensibilities and our natural world. We want to develop our products that can contribute to the understanding of art and the natural world, creating awareness and conservation as well as cultivating knowledge and sustainability. Our values and products align in what we do and why we do it. That’s the promise we made when we started down this road and it’s the value proposition that drives us.
